Water Tests
The water ratings test is a working certificate available from the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America. The test was developed to demonstrate and maintain the GSP’s capabilities as a waterfowl retriever. There are three different levels offered:
Novice Retrieving Dog (NRD) – The dog is required to retrieve a fresh killed bird thrown 20 to 40 yards beyond the shoreline. The dog must return the bird to within the designated circle located at least 3 feet from the shoreline.
Retrieving Dog (RD) – The dog is required to perform a double retrieve through decoys. At least one of the birds must be a live flyer and steadiness and delivery to hand is required.
Retrieving Dog Excellent (RDX) – The dog is required to perform a triple retrieve through decoys at longer distances than the RD test level. At least one of the birds must be a live flyer and steadiness and delivery to hand is required. Upon completion of the triple, the dog is required to complete a blind retrieve through the decoys.

The Gulf Coast GSP Club allows dogs of any breed to participate and awards camouflage rosettes to all participants to successfully complete each test level. However, titles and working certificates are only issued to registered GSP’s whose owners are members of the GSPCA.
The Gulf Coast GSP Club offers the water ratings test once per year. We have held the test in the spring, summer and in the fall in conjunction with our annual Fun Day and Club Picnic. We’ve discovered that attempts to hold the event in the fall conflict with too many trials and hunting tests. Holding the water test during the summer makes it difficult to hold all of the training activities we like to include with our Fun Day. As a result, we will be holding future test in the late spring, after the spring trials and hunt tests are through for the year. We will be holding the tests in late April or early May on weekends selected to avoid conflicts with other regional events. Check back here in February or March for the specific dates and location of our next Water Ratings Test.
